AAL Signs Agreement with NZ Army - January 2009

AAL is pleased to announce that it has recently signed an agreement with the New Zealand Army to service and support their Weapons Training System (WTS) Simulator.

The system, a Meggitt Training Systems’ product is a state of the art simulator that provides computer-generated landscapes and targets and uses weapons that fire lasers and compressed air rather than bullets or shells.

The simulator is located in Waiouru and consists of two ranges, each with 12 lanes and their own weapons pits. Graphics are projected onto three large screens to simulate the soldier’s field of vision. The simulator allows trainees to be taught basic weapon safety, firing procedures and marksmanship before using live ammunition. The aim being to improve the soldier’s weapon handling skills, safety and accuracy, all for a lower cost than live firings and with the benefit of availability 24/7.

The simulator has three modes: Computer Generated Imagery (CGI), Lanes and Judgemental Training. Both individual and group training are able to be conducted in these modes. The CGI training capability allows the soldier to operate in a virtual environment with the capacity to carryout Indirect Fire Training as well as call in fixed or rotary wing Close Air Support.

Soldiers are able to use the simulator with a number of different weapons currently used by the NZ Army including the Steyr assault rifle, light machine guns and anti tank weapons.  Whilst the British and Australian armies have similar ranges, Waiouru is the largest such facility in the Southern Hemisphere.

AAL (Meggitt’s New Zealand agent) will be providing long term support for the system that consists of regular preventative servicing, maintenance and repairs for both the computer system and the weapons. The Royal New Zealand Navy places order with UK Based DT Media - January 2009

The deal comes just weeks after the US Air Force placed a second order with DT Media after using ‘Insight’, an innovative product aimed at reducing the risk of ‘friendly fire’ in battle.

The Royal New Zealand Navy will install DT Media’s Fleetman Fleetwork Simulation Trainer*, which is a family of computer-based naval trainers designed to exploit the full power of modern PCs, at its Maritime Warfare Training Centre, in Auckland, next month.

DT Media supplies off-the-shelf and bespoke simulation, training and cutting edge real-time 3D visualisation software products such as Fleetman and Insight, as well as fully integrated ‘turnkey’ simulation solutions, to clients across the world.

Fleetman enables the running of simulation exercises using a mix of ships, submarines, helicopters and aircraft. Students, or groups of students, may be assigned to different platforms within the exercise over a workstation network. Real-time software is used so that, if one student manoeuvres their platform, all other students in the exercise will see the manoeuvre as it is carried out. Fleetman has been in service with the UK Royal Navy Maritime Warfare Schools and waterfront learning centres since 2004.

DT Media’s upturn in sales coincides with a further round of funding from the Finance South West Growth Fund. Plymouth-based Finance South West, which closed for new applications for investment in December, is an £18 million investment fund that provided commercial finance from £10,000 up to £1 million for buying, selling, starting or growing a business in the Objective Two area of the South West. Finance South West invested over £15million in over 100 businesses in the region.

Chris Notman Smith from DT Media said: “We are obviously delighted and very excited that the Royal New Zealand Navy has selected DT Media for its Fleetman software and the team very much looks forward to working with them in the future.”

Chris Burt, Business Fund Manager for Finance South West, said: “We were happy to increase our investment in such a forward-thinking and successful company as DT Media, which has an increasingly impressive client base, and we look forward to playing a significant part in its continuing success.”

DT Media worked on the deal in partnership with New Zealand-based AAL (Training and Systems Solutions for Defence).
